Highlights of the October 5, 2008 event
- First ever Homeless Connect in Edmonton; a massive community movement which engaged many organizations, service providers and volunteers to provide a one-stop shop aimed specifically at homeless and at risk of becoming homeless population

- Homeless Connect started in San Francisco and now over 200 cities worldwide have similar events
- Over 1500 guests registered by 2:00 pm; total number in excess of 1800
- Over 40 agencies provided over 50 services varying from foot care, immunization, haircuts, counseling, housing workshops
- Event promoted through posters at key locations and business card-size event notices distributed by agencies, outreach workers, Edmonton Police and volunteers to homeless people
- Shaw Conference Centre provided the venue at no cost and received commitments from multiple suppliers to donate food, beverages and services

- Over 2000 hot meals were served
- Over 200 volunteers filled various positions including greeters, registration, guest guides and service liaison
- Laundry facilities were provided by Coinomatic, delivered and set up on site
- United Way coordinated the collection and supply of 1000 comfort kits (back packs) filled with numerous items such as tooth paste, tooth brushes, notebooks, etc. as well as winter coats
- Salvation Army initiated a winter clothing drive and provided free clothing

- Shaw Cable and Internet services enabled guests to call anywhere in the world at no charge
- Basic data was collected for all registrants. In addition over 100 surveys were completed with more in-depth questions regarding guests’ housing history, experience and needs
- An on-line feedback survey has been sent to all volunteers and service providers regarding the event and future plans
- Many volunteers have subsequently committed to assist with the Homeless Count on October 4, 2009.
