Housing and homelessness the key emphasis during November
Today, Mayor Stephen Mandel proclaimed November as Housing Month in the city, at the request of the Edmonton Joint Planning Committee on Housing.
During the month of November Edmonton will host a number of housing and homelessness-related activities that will span the entire month. “Once again November will be an active and exciting time for housing-related activities in the city,” said Joint Planning Executive Director Susan McGee. “Housing Month is an opportunity to talk about the issues surrounding our housing challenges, as well as focus on homelessness concerns that are top of mind right now in Edmonton,” McGee added.
A number of high profile events are taking place in November, including Homefest 2007, hosted by the Edmonton Coalition on Housing and Homelessness Society. Homefest is a concert to raise awareness of the housing crisis that is having an impact on the lives of thousands of people in Edmonton. The 2007 concert will be held at the Transalta Arts Barns on Sunday, Nov. 4 from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Money raised by the concert will be donated to support housing needs in Edmonton.
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation is holding a one day housing outlook conference in Edmonton at the Westin Hotel today. Market analysts and economists will reveal what is in store for housing in Edmonton for 2008.
Building Affordable Homes and Communities, the University of Alberta’s City-Region Studies Centre is hosting a two-day housing workshop Nov. 5-6, 2007 at the Westin Hotel. The workshop will feature Dr. Avi Friedman, world-renowned expert on affordable housing and the Director of the Affordable Homes Program at McGill University. The conference will examine critical issues involved in the design of sustainable housing and communities.
In addition to the housing workshop, Dr. Friedman will be holding a free public lecture at the Westin Hotel on Sunday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Affordable Housing: Building Healthy Communities is the focus of the lecture that will examine the critical issues involved in the design of affordable homes and communities.
A business breakfast, featuring a keynote speaker will be held at the Westin Hotel on National Affordable Housing Day, Nov. 22, 2007. The Edmonton Joint Planning Committee on Housing and the Edmonton Housing Trust Fund have partnered with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Capital Region Housing Corporation and the City of Edmonton to host the event.
Included in November housing activities is the official opening on Nov. 2, 2007 of the L’Arche Association of Edmonton’s Ted Bradshaw House. The $1.5 million 10-unit facility will provide safe, supportive, low-cost housing for persons with developmental disabilities.
In addition, as concern mounts over the number of homeless people in the city, Joint Planning has been actively working with the community in Edmonton to develop a comprehensive winter emergency plan. The plan will provide for additional shelter space to house the city’s homeless over the winter months.
In conjunction with Housing Month, the Edmonton Coalition on Housing and Homelessness Society has released a 2008 calendar that features positive images of a range of people affected by the housing challenges faced in Edmonton. Copies of the calendar can be obtained at the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (101, 10010-107A Avenue) and Earth’s General Store (10832 Whyte Ave.). The cost is $15.
Finally, Joint Planning will be unveiling portions of a new community information campaign designed to heighten awareness around the need for low-income, affordable housing in Edmonton and to lessen the NIMBY (Not-In-My-Back-Yard) resistance to potential future developments.
