Over 300 people packed the ballroom at the Crowne Plaza-Chateau Lacombe Hotel today as the winners of the Second Annual ROOPH Awards were announced at an awards luncheon to recognize outstanding organizations, people and housing in Edmonton.
The Edmonton Housing Trust Fund created the ROOPH awards to formally acknowledge the accomplishments of individuals, organizations and businesses who deal with affordable housing and homelessness issues.
“All of this year’s nominees were deserving of recognition. It was not easy for the jury to select a winner in each category,” said Trust Fund Chair Harvey Voogd. “This is the second year of the awards and we are thrilled with the response from the community and with the number of nominations we received,” Voogd added.
The Edmonton Housing Trust Fund has been a key funder of safe, affordable housing and support services for the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless in Edmonton since 1999. It is committed to raising funds in support of housing initiatives and support services targeted to low-income and disadvantaged individuals.
The City of Edmonton received a Special Recognition Award at today’s event for its vision, leadership, innovation and collaboration with the community around housing solutions to address the ongoing need for more affordable housing in the city.
The West Edmonton Interfaith Coalition on Poverty has been designated by the Trust Fund as the beneficiary of this year’s proceeds from the sales of luncheon tickets. The group provides food, clothing and referral services for housing to individuals and familites from west Edmonton.
