Over 350 people packed the main ballroom at the Westin Hotel in downtown Edmonton today as the winners of the Third Annual ROOPH Awards were announced at an awards luncheon to recognize outstanding organizations, people and housing in Edmonton.
The Edmonton Housing Trust Fund and the Edmonton Joint Planning Committee on Housing sponsor the ROOPH awards to formally acknowledge the accomplishments of individuals, organizations and businesses who deal with affordable housing and homelessness issues in the city.
“There were so many excellent nominees this year, representing a number of innovative, high quality projects,” said Edmonton Housing Trust Fund Chair Martin Garber-Conrad. “It was difficult to choose just one winner in each category.”
“Every year the ROOPH Awards provide much-deserved recognition to the people, projects and organizations that are doing incredible work in this city to combat homelessness and provide support services so necessary to our most vulnerable citizens,” remarked Jay Freeman, Chair of the Edmonton Joint Planning Committee on Housing.
The Trust Fund has been a key funder of safe, affordable housing and support services for the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless in Edmonton since 1999. It is committed to raising funds in support of housing initiatives and support services targeted to low-income and disadvantaged individuals.
Joint Planning conducts a biennial homeless count and funds local research initiatives that help to address the priority low-income, special and transitional housing needs of Edmontonians.
Reginald Appleyard received a Special Recognition Award at today’s event for his contributions to public housing initiatives through his work with the Meadowcroft Housing Society.
Victory Church on the Rock has been designated by the Trust Fund and Joint Planning as the beneficiary of this year’s proceeds from the sales of luncheon tickets. This donation will allow them to continue their partnership with other churches in North East Edmonton and to continue to assist the area’s homeless with food and clothing.
