Judging Criteria

Partnerships for Success

The winning entrant will demonstrate a positive impact on addressing homelessness and affordable housing needs through partnerships. Examples of which are:
  • Innovative approaches in their housing practice and/or
  • Collaborative approaches to working with other organizations and sectors, including non- traditional partners
  • Nominations for this award need to be specific, tied into a specific project or outcome and need to highlight the pivotal role the individual has played in bringing the partnership together.

Excellence in Building Design

The winning entrant will be a building / housing project, which addresses some or all of these issues:
  • Delivers positive and sustainable change to the surrounding community
  • Addresses the impact of the project on the environment, and takes into account the environmental footprint of the project
  • Has a physical design that is intended to make a genuine difference in people's lives
  • Is based on innovative approaches to problem solving
  • Provides value for money in terms of efficient use of interior space and fits into the surrounding community.

Larry Shaben Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Housing Sector

The winning entrant will demonstrate their impact on people's lives and the impact this has on the profile and reputation of the affordable housing / homelessness sector. The winning entrant will have some or all these attributes:
  • Work collaboratively with other organizations and sectors
  • Known for making a genuine difference to housing residents and other clients' lives
  • Active in her/his own professional development
  • Passionate and committed to the housing / homelessness sector, who act beyond their role and responsibility.

Exceptional Volunteerism in the Housing Sector

The winning entrant will demonstrate their dedication to the affordable housing sector and homelessness through their voluntarism, attributes include:
  • The individual is known for making a genuine difference to housing residents and other clients' lives, and
  • Is actively committed to donating their personal time, energy, and/or resources to (an) organization(s) serving homeless individuals/families and/or those at risk of becoming homeless

Outstanding Service for the Aboriginal Community

The winning entrant will demonstrate that their work makes a significant difference to the lives of Aboriginal people in Edmonton with housing needs.

If nominating an individual please consider the following:
  • Explain in detail the role of an individual within a project, partnership (including any voluntary activity)
  • Describe their innovative approaches to working in partnership with other agencies
  • Describe how the individual contributes to sustainable change for either an individual/family or for the community as whole
  • Describe how the individual uses housing resources creatively to meet needs of clients.
If nominating an organization, please consider the following:
  • Explain in detail the role of the organization within the housing / homelessness community and the Aboriginal community
  • Describe innovative partnership ways of working
  • Describe how the organization contributes to sustainable change for either individuals/families or for the community as whole
  • Describe how the organization uses housing resources creatively to meet needs of clients.
Rooph Awards

What the Awards are about

The ROOPH Awards recognize outstanding organizations and people in housing in Edmonton and provide an opportunity to highlight success stories from within the housing and relative support services sector. The Awards formally recognize and reward best practices.

The ROOPH Awards recognize individuals, organizations, and businesses that work to address affordable housing and homelessness initiatives in our city, whether paid or in a volunteer role. All sections of the community are encouraged to apply and the ROOPH Committee seeks nominations from new organizations and / or for "the unsung heroes" of the housing / homelessness sector.

Rooph Awards Categories

Partnerships for Success

Recognizes the important role of partnerships between private, not-for-profit, and/or public agencies to address homelessness or affordable housing needs and/or support services within our community. Nominations are encouraged for a key person playing a pivotal role within a partnership.

Excellence in Building Design

Recognizes excellence in building design that incorporates features such as unique use of space, commitment to quality, accessibility, affordability, historic preservation, and/or environmental impact.

Larry Shaben Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Housing Sector

Recognizes those individuals who are highly committed to working in the housing sector, who promote or develop housing or related services, and who are passionate about what they do.

Exceptional Volunteerism in the Housing Sector

Recognizes dedication in assisting in the promotion or development of housing or related services as an unpaid volunteer.

Outstanding Service for the Aboriginal Community

Recognizes an organization or individual who has made a positive impact on housing and/or support services for Aboriginal peoples in Edmonton.
